O luely, luely, cam she in
And luely she lay doun:
I kent her be her caller lips
And jer breists sae sma’ and roun’.
A’ thru the night we spak nae word
Nor sinder’d bane frae bane:
A’ thru the nicht I heard her heart
Gang soundin’ wi’ my ain.
It was about the waukrife hour
When cocks begin to craw
That she smool’d saftly thru the mirk
Afore the day wud daw.
Sae luely, luely, cam she in
Saie luely was she gaen;
And wi’ her a’ my simmer days
Like they had never been.
William Soutar
William Soutar (1898-1943) was a Scottish poet and writer. He contracted polio as a child and was confined to a wheelchair for most of his life. Despite his physical limitations, Soutar wrote prolifically and published several collections of poetry and prose. His work often dealt with themes of love, nature, and the Scottish landscape. Some of his best-known works include "The Happy Warrior," "The Three Eyes," and "The Land of the Leal."
