July 6, 2023Ode Written In The Beginning Of The Year 1746
How sleep the brave, who sink to rest,
By all their country’s wishes blest!
When Spring, with dewy fingers cold,
Returns to deck their hallowed mould,
She there shall dress a sweeter sod
Than Fancy’s feet have ever trod.
By fairy hands their knell is rung;
By forms unseen their dirge is sung;
There Honour comes, a pilgrim grey,
To bless the turf that wraps their clay;
And Freedom shall awhile repair
To dwell a weeping hermit there!
William Taylor Collins
William Taylor Collins (1818-1887) was a British poet, songwriter, and journalist. He wrote under the pen name "Theophilus Marcliffe." Collins worked as a reporter for several newspapers in London and later became the editor of the Weekly Times. His poetry often dealt with themes of love, nature, and social justice. Some of his best-known works include "The Lay of the Old Roman," "To a Bride," and "The Cricket on the Hearth."
