We ate our breakfast lying on our backs,
Because the shells were screeching overhead.
I bet a rasher to a loaf of bread
That Hull United would beat Halifax
When Jimmy Strainthorpe played full-back instead
Of Billy Bradford. Ginger raised his head
And cursed, and took the bet; and dropt back dead.

Wilfrid Wilson Gibson
Wilfrid Wilson Gibson (1878-1962) was an English poet who was associated with the Georgian poets. He is known for his exploration of the themes of nature, spirituality, and the human condition. His most famous works include "Fires" and "The Stonefolds." Gibson was also a friend of many of the leading literary figures of his time, including Rupert Brooke and D.H. Lawrence.
