A Divine Image
Cruelty has a human heart,
And Jealousy a human face;
Terror the human form divine,
And Secresy the human dress.
The human dress is forged iron,
The human form a fiery forge,
The human face a furnace sealed,
The human heart its hungry gorge.
William Blake (1757-1827) was an English poet, painter, and printmaker who is considered one of the most important figures of the Romantic era. He is best known for his poetry collections, "Songs of Innocence" and "Songs of Experience," which explore themes of childhood, spirituality, and the human condition. Blake was also a visual artist, and his paintings and illustrations often feature the same themes as his poetry.
