Regret for Peony Flowers
I’m saddened by the peonies before the steps, so red,
As evening came I found that only two remained.
Once morning’s winds have blown, they surely won’t survive,
At night I gaze by lamplight, to cherish the fading red.
Bai Juyi (772-846) was a Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty known for his simple, direct style and his focus on everyday life and common people. His poetry often dealt with themes of love, friendship, and social justice, and he is considered one of the greatest poets in Chinese history. Some of his notable works include "The Song of Everlasting Sorrow" and "A Pipa Song".
