Love and Jealousy
How much are they deceived who vainly strive,
By jealous fears, to keep our flames alive?
Love’s like a torch, which if secured from blasts,
Will faintlier burn; but then it longer lasts.
Exposed to storms of jealousy and doubt,
The blaze grows greater, but ’tis sooner out.
William Walsh (1663-1708) was an English poet and translator, known for his work in the Restoration period. He was a friend of Alexander Pope, and the two poets collaborated on several projects together. Walsh's own work often explored themes of love and nature, and some of his best-known poems include "The Victory of Love", "In Memory of Mr. Oldham", and "On a Young Lady's Sixth Birthday".
