We’ll return the little box
Into the arms
Of her inconspicuously honest properties
We won’t do anything
Against her will
We’ll simply take her apart
We’ll crucify her
On her own cross
Pierce her bloated emptiness
And let ooze
All the blue cosmic blood she gathered
We’ll sweep her clean of stars
And anti-stars
And everything else that rots inside her
We won’t make her suffer
We’ll simply put her together again
We’ll give back to the little box
Her pure inconspicuousness
Vasko Popa
Vasko Popa (1922-1991) was a Serbian poet associated with the Yugoslav Surrealist movement. Popa's poetry often dealt with themes of death, rebirth, and the supernatural. His work was deeply influenced by Serbian folklore and mythology. Popa was also a translator, and he introduced Serbian readers to the work of many foreign poets, including T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and Dylan Thomas. He is considered one of the most important Serbian poets of the 20th century.
